There are three really 'lame' reasons why George W. Bush unconstitutionally and illegally invaded another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked, or attacked the United States:
1) The Bush family had a vendetta against Saddam Hussein going back to the days of Desert Storm when George H.W. Bush was criticized, humiliated and ridiculed for not 'finishing the job' and ousting Hussein then;
2) Dick Cheney and his Exxon-Mobile buddies want all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so they can get richer and richer and richer feeding America's dependency on cheap, easily-accessible foreign oil;
3) The giant U.S. military-industrial complex needed another 'war' to boost its profits. Ever since World War II, industrialists realized how profitable 'war' could be, so they bought up all the politicians, hired pricey lobbyists, and formed special interest groups to encourage and/or promote 'war'. Thus, the U.S. was involved in the Korean Conflict; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Cold War; Vietnam; and Desert Storm, all for corporate profits - at any cost.
The Iraqi cultural conflicts have been going on for 1500 years, and the U.S. doesn't give a damn about "bringing democracy" to Iraq. It wants all that OIL. Period. End of story.
What's next? By late spring, 2007, Bush will invade Iran for the very same reason (as soon as he can come up with a plausible excuse with which to satisfy the 'ditto heads' who love to go to war as long as they don't have to bleed to death themselves). Bush will take Iran's OIL...all so that a handful of the U.S.A.'s wealthy elitists can become even more obscenely rich than they already are. -RKO-

History lesson...
Saddam signed a cease fire during the first gulf war. It was a cease fire the WAR NEVER ENDED. The cease fire had certain conditions that Saddam failed to comply with during the Clinton Administration. Clinton failed to follow up on those conditions. 9/11 and the threat of terrorism brought about new interest in Saddam and his connections to terrorism and WMD (NOTE: Terrorism in general not just 9/11). Saddams failure to comply with the conditions of the cease fire plus his continued defiance by firing at US planes in the no fly zone; and his possible continued development of WMD in the hands of terrorists forced us to finish the war started in the early 90's.
It's actually pretty simple.

To answer the first question, the world is running out of oil, and Iraq is the only large oil producer that is way before its peak production.
Now what? Depends on whether congress has a back bone.
Why destroy more? Because we don't have full control of their oil fields yet.
