Booting is running a very small program which does pretty much nothing except run another program - the operating system.
The name from from the phrase "pulling yourself up by the bootstraps" (since a computer can't do anything without an OS, including run an OS)

There are different types of "Boots"
Cold Boot = To turn on the computer after the power supply has been turned completely off
Soft Boot = When you press the Reset button or choose Re-Start
But booting refers to the process of starting your PC up, or "Turning it on"
Deleting everything on you computer is called Formatting or Re-formatting, and you dont need any programs to do it. You had better know what your doing and that in order to use the PC again you have to have either the set-up floppies or set-up CD, as well as know how to access you CMOS setting before you go fooling around deleting the whole drive

Booting only means to turn it on. Rebooting means to start it up while it is all ready on.
It comes from the term "pull oneself up by the bootstraps". This means to start fresh with no help.

No, it is just turning on or restarting your computer by going to "start" "shutdown" and selecting "restart."
Hope that helps.
