I have a scientific atlanta explorer 8300 hd and i want to buy an external hard drive to have more space for my recordings.. I was thinking about a 200gb. Will this work?

Yes.
According to this manual it should work fine :
(any external SATA drive should work)

I would purchase the external drive from somewhere like Best Buy because of there no hassle return policy.

The audio / video plugs ought to likely require you to elect an aux video enter (likely from the settings menu). The USB connector isn't used except for upkeep (i.e. no longer with assistance from the top person).
