That signifies the day that Saint Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland. The year was 1737. He was also known to have driven all of the snakes out of Ireland. He is their patron saint.

Once a year St. Patrick comes's to earth and by indulging in the sprites, it will drive the snakes out of Ireland,and then people then and only then can safely hunt for potatoes in the fields. Believe it,or not!

St. Patrick brought Christianity into Ireland and a lot of Irish people immigrated to the U.S. so i guess it carried over.
