Owning an alligator is not a good idea. They are dangerous and can get large. They are WILD animals. What will you do when he becomes an adult? Release it into the wild putting the fragile ecosystem at risk like every other irresponsible pet owner that decides that owning a wild carnivore is cool? All I am saying is think before doing something this crazy. There are better pets to choose from than alligators.

first u don't want an alligator when that cute baby thing grows up to be a huge thing it can be a serious problem. i watch the animal planet all the time and people leave there pet alligator behind or set it free in a pond. becuase it got to big for them to handle. that thing can always turn on u. and even if u don't care it will get big then and where are u gonna keep it. its illegal to own one so its not like u can call a zoo to take it away and what if it gets sick where are u gonna take it. u have to have the right habitate and enough food for it. and they are very expensive.
BUT if u really want one then i don't know sorry. but u should think about what u want to buy. u can always go to a country and get a poacher to get one but ask not to kill it and have them send it over to u. but that would cost a lot alot of more money.HOPE THIS HELPS!

Hello, from CMH also... Before buying, check your local ordinances for legality. Some municipalities will not allow them. Also, I am a herpetological enthusiast...I have a 16' Reticulated python, so I know large, aggresive reptiles...I have to ask, are you prepared to buy something that eventually you are going to have to get rid of due to just the overall size? They will never tame down, and quite frankly, unless you are a kid under 18, it will outlive you. Jeff's Pet Center on S. High St. has babies, but they will even discourage the purchase. If you want a 'gator, think about if you want a child...it will outlive you, and it WILL eat you out of house and home. Be PREPARED for more than just a pet, it will be a comitment. If you are serious and willing to take care of it properly, good luck and you will enjoy it.

Alligators are legal in the state of Ohio. You can purchase one at xtreme pets in Dayton Ohio. Many states had made laws against them, but luckily for you Ohio is not one of them.

Why do you want to own an alligator? For the machismo factor? Not a good enough reason as far as I'm concerned. I have permits from the state of Florida that allow me to possess and display alligators for eductional purposes, which is the only reason I have my alligator, because, yes, they're cute when they're little, but when they get to be around 5 feet, they're too much to handle, used to have to sit on Pursey to keep him still at that age.... they hit about 6 feet and they hit alligator puberty, which is when alligators become true alligators, instinct, millions of years of instinct kick in and your alligator decides it has to fight with everything it comes in contact with... Pursey was good, we had him for 13 years, he's now at Gatorama in Okeechobee, Fl, living out the rest of his life with other alligators like himself. Now I have Stinky, and one day, he too, will have to go away.
When you alligator has to go away, where will you take it? Who can take it from you, and who -will- take it from you? You'll take it to the zoo? Good luck, zoos have all the alligators they need. You need to think about these questions before you get an alligator if you get an alligator... not just where can I get one, but where will I put it, what will I feed it? What do I do with it after it bites me? All kinds of things.
Anyway, I know this is long, but it's about to be longer...
Check with your state fish and wildlife or department of natural resources or whatever covers your wildlife law enforcement needs, and ask what the state of Ohio requires for private ownership of an alligator. Then you worry about finding an exotic pet dealer, or go to a reptile show, things like this.
Please think this over completely before going through with it, alligators are a -lot- of responsibility...

I amazes me how "pet" has changed from cute and cuddly over the years to becoming alligator, elephant, bear, rhinoceros and the like.
NONE OF THE ABOVE ARE PETS !!
To answer your question:
1. Check with your state, local and city on laws pertaining to HAZARDOUS animals.
2. Purchase the necessary permits and build the facility to house your "NEW PET". This is generally a requirement before purchase is made.
3. Find a reputable Alligator Farmer that has the permits to sell Alligators.

you need an environment to keep them and get them fish every other day ,they grow up to be 3 meters long, and can live to be 60,what are you gonna do when the fun wears off
in Mexico it is illegal to own Aligators
i got 5 baby ones because i work for the department of Ecology and got a special bio space with plants ,water fall and ponds with fish ,and the police give me the ones that they rescue or confiscate ,to look after for a while ,when they get big they go back in to nature to hunt fishermen
