No second-hand smoke, either! Here's a big tip I got from my doc during my last pregnancy - no Aspartame (diet drinks) or sugar-free gum. It has recently been proven to affect a baby's brain growth. She said gum is particularly bad because we keep it in our mouths so long and the skin between the roof of our mouths and our blood vessels is so thin that Aspartame gets in more easily.
No raw weiners (my friend who's a chef just attended a food safety conference and it showed that raw weiners can transmit listeriosis to pregnant mothers), no raw fish (sashimi), no unpasteurized cheese. Otherwise, have at 'er! Eat whatever stays down in the first few months. And don't eat for 2... you don't need that many more calories to grow a baby. Good luck!

Stay away from pot and cigarette smoke, they mean. I suggest it also. If you go out to a resturant for an hour and they have a smoking area and it doesn't personally bother you, that's okay for the baby. But being newly preg might change how you react to things and all of sudden restuarant smoke might make you feel ill and make you feel like vomitting or give you a headahce. If you feel this way, leave. Go to smoke free places then. But it's not good for the baby to be in a bar or a house that has smokers and your are in there for hours. I was a smoker and I quit when I got pregnant. I did it for my baby plus it made me ill. I read in a pamphlet that when a mother smokes one cigarette, her unborn baby is smoking 10 cigarettes. It's lungs are so tiny.

Pregnant women should take Folic Acid. My OB-GYN gave me a prescription for it in pill form. And you can find in naturally in some fruits. So talk to you doctor about that.

You will want to eat healthy, fruits ,veges, fish, etc. You can eat whatever you want. Your tastebuds might change. Say, if your favorite food right now is bananas, you might start to vomit at the sight of bananas. Being pregnant is strange, how your body changes. I ate vanilla ice cream with purple grape every night and drank iced tea a lot. I suggest you get plenty of fluids. Water, of course, is the best. And fruit juices, which ever you can stand, apple, cranberry, grape, etc. Just don't take in extra sugars and extra salt (sodium). And as your baby grows, he/she will like certain foods that you eat and your body will have gravings for that foods and you will want to eat it daily. When I was 7-9 months preg, I would make my husband go to Taco-bell at all hours for a soft taco and nachos and cheese and a diet Coke. I'd even wake him up at 1 am to go thru the drive-thru. Some pregnancy women get weird gravings and at weird hours. It's natural. Oh, I also started to chew Hubba Bubba Watermelon when I was 5 months. I have to give a hands up to husbands/boyfriends that drive to all the stores and drive-thrus at all hours of the day and nights for the preg women. They suffer along with us! :)

Don't take any over-the-counter medicines unless your doctor says it's safe or your talk to the pharmacist first. I use to take Advil for headaches but had to stop taking it when I was pregnant.

Like I said, every woman is different when they are pregnant. Food cravings are different. Foods we hate are different. But get plenty of fluid, eat healthy, take folic acid and see an OB-GYN for any questions about over-the-counter medicinces.

Good luck!

No alcohol, no smoking, no drugs. Just try to steer clear of sceondhand smoke as best as you can.

Foods to avoid: Hot dogs and lunchmeat unless they are heated to steaming first (risk of listeriosis which is very dangerous to baby), soft cheeses such as Brie and Bleu (again listeriosis risk), tilefish, mackerel, and Great Lakes fish because of the high mercury content.

Avoid changing cat boxes if you have a cat as cats carry toxoplasmosis in their feces. This is harmless to the general population but very dangerous for pregnant women to contract, it can result in miscarriage stillbirth and birth defects.

Ask your doctor for a complete list.

THIS LOOKS LIKE A GOOD SITE. TOP THINGS TO AVOID WHILE PREGNANT. HOWEVER AS MOST PREGNANT WOMEN COME TO RELISE..THIS LIST SEEMS TO NEVER END. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU READ OR HEAR ABOUT THAT YOUR SUPPOSED TO AVOID THAT YOU DIDNT KNOW ABOUT. SOME PEOPLE SWEAR CAFFINE IS BAD, BUT SITTING IN MY OB'S OFFICE ONE DAY I READ AN ARTICLE THAT SAID UP TO 3 CUPS A DAY ISNT KNOWN TO CAUSE ANY BAD SIDE EFFECTS ON THE BABY. THERE IS ALWAYS CONFLICTING INFO. JUST DO THE BEST YOU CAN AND CONGRATS ON YOUR LITTLE ONE.

You aren't supposed to eat certain types of fish, especially raw fish (sushi). With my pregnancy, I didn't crave fish at all, in fact it made me sick to think about it. I think with the smoke you are just supposed to avoid being in smoky places because it, too, can cause you to get sick and nauseous. You aren't supposed to eat lunch meat either unless it is cooked. I forgot that a few times and ate at subway, though, and I was fine. Drink lots of water and limit your caffeine intake. Good luck with everything and congrats with your pregnancy!

Caffeine, some fish (sorry I don't know which ones, I don't eat fish), hot dogs (try tofu dogs), anything with artificial sweeteners, and alcohol just to name a few.

I also found out in your 3rd trimester, try to avoid nuts in case your child is allergic, you'll just keep throwing them up. Yes, this happened to my friend.

i do not hassle answering questions that are violations. the reason being, even as the question is bumped off everybody that responded provides again the factors they earned so for this reason it really is unnecessary to respond to, pretty chatty variety questions, maximum that answer chatty questions stand a danger of being stated for chatting as well.
