Each finger has 4 bones, the thumb has three bones, that accounts for 19 bones.

The eight carpal bones at the base of the fingers account for the rest.

Believe it or not, it depends on the age of the person. As we age, the carpal bones (wrist bones) fuse. See if you can view the X-ray of a childs hand vs an adults hand.
