He/she wears dark sunglasses and has a walking stick. Sorry I could not resist. I believe doctors perform light sensation tests to newborns. If the eye responds to the light I think there is some image from the eye to the brain, but it is quite possible I made that up. I earnestly hope your child has impeccable eyesight and your fears are simply new parent jitters. I'll be checking for an answer to this question and hopefully you'll follow up.

They usually do a number of tests while in the hospital and an eye test is one of them. But newborns aren't usually able to see anyway in the beginning. I think they can only see shadows and a little light. Throught the first month, ur baby will have weekly checkups and his/her doctor will keep an eye on that.

My little guys were tested. They say that babies can only see about the distance from the mothers breast to her face when they are first born. My husband and I were worried too but as the days went by we noticed that he was starting to pay more attention to items a foot away he is now 4 1/2 months and is watching the colors on the tv.

Normally yes, it is hard to determine what they see since 0-3 months they can only see a short distance. Their vision is not complete until 10mos to a year

theyre eyes arent tested when they are born. you could see if when you hold something up and drag it to the left or right if they even seem to care or notice. IF not there is a chance they are blind but if they do followe it then they probably arent blind. when twp or three you can go to doctor.

sight is one of the scoring points on the apgar test for newborns. If there was an indication of abnormality at the time of testing you would have been told.if you have any fears of your newborns sight is in danger or isnt normal you must take them immediatly back to your doctor.call right now to talk to someone or to schedule an appointment.

A new babies focus is erratic and they may not be able to coordinate their eye muscle motion for a couple weeks. the doctor would have checked by shining a flash light toward the eyes to see the pupils get smaller.

They do a hearing test but not a vision screening. They check general eye health while at the hospital.
