I can do this on my 91 Silverado by putting a jump from the ground to the dianostic port.

You need interrogator, otherwise known as an On board Diagnostic System II generation( OBDS II) scanner to extract codes from 1994 and newer vehicles. Since then, all were made with a standard diagnostic port in a standard location below the steering column, and will only communicate through a scanner. $150 anywhere with manual. Keep in mind they don't tell you how to repair anything, only direct you to a point in the diagnostic routine. The only time you need to do this is if the Malfunction Indicator Lamp( MIL ) is steady on or you have seen it flash repeatedly. No jumping diagnostic connectors here unless you want to fry your computer.

No you can not. Starting with 1996 vehicles, auto makers started using OBD II systems. The only way you can retrieve or erase codes from this type system is with a code scanner.

go to autozone, they do a free dianostic, gm usually always has the dianostic port un the steering whel, a paper clip will work if you put both ends in the holes

no, you need an OBD2 Scanner to hook into the PCM plug
