probably because of gas expenses increasing.

Well, some include delivery in the price of the pizza, if u spend atleast 15 or 20 dollars. Dominos has free delivery on some specials. Most charge the fees to pay the drivers. I can get a pizza from Hungry Howies, or Pizzahut or dominos with extra cheese usually a large with garlic bread and a salad and pop with delivery for about 19 dollars. Just look at the local papers like NEws' or Freepress and they usually have couponsl...
Speaking of which, Pizza sounds good. I might just order one myself... Weekend food....

Well, seeing that in the "good ol days" of free delivery, the pizza cost about the same, but the insurance and the gas cost about half the price, pizza places didn't need to charge it to make money.

There was a day when people realized that delivery people use their own cars, gas and insurance. Delivery driver's make their money from tips, and for some reason, many people do not tip or give meager tips compared to the cost of delivering pizza or other foods. Plus gas prices are high so some places had to start charging due to the fact that people are just plain inconsiderate of the plight of delivery people.
Just like servers in a restaurant, tips are their "bread & butter." Rarely do people "stiff" servers at a restaurant. Unfortunately, it's not the same for delivery drivers.
This is the reason for the charge. They are assuredly NOT "ripping you off."

Because the delivery people use their own car and they don't get paid that much so the pizza chain charges a fee to help pay for the gas. I know Papa John's Pizza does not have a fee for it though.

You are right. Around here Domino's has raised their prices for pizza and the other food items now cost $6 each. There is a delivery charge added on and you are supposed to tip the drivers. A serving of pizza for our family is beginning to cost about $7-8 per person. This is pizza, for the love of pepperoni!? For this much money we can order Steak Out and get a real meal! Now if the pizza was super fantastic we might not gripe but this is Domino's! Pizza Hut has completely priced me out with it's almost thirty bucks for a pizza delivered. I'm telling you, I can make a pretty mean pizza myself. And buying the ready made crusts just makes it more tempting.

Are you driving a vehicle these days? Our gas is $1.14 a litre here so that's why they are charging a fee. I guess the other option would be to hike the price of the pizza itself and in doing so the delivery fee would be hidden from the consumer.

There was never "free" delivery.
The cost was already included in the price of your order.
Just because the companies didn't itemize doesn't mean you weren't paying it... it had to come from somewhere.
So now the companies tack on another 1.50 - 2.00 in addition to what you were already paying... its just a deceiving scam.
This scam hurts the delivery drivers, overcharges the customers, and the store owners are laughing all the way to the bank.
(does anyone really think that the store owners decided to impose a delivery charge so that they could pay their drivers another 1.50 - 2.00 in addition to what they were already paying them per run? of course not, the store owners are keeping the money)

Probably becasue there are so many people who order pizza who don't tip or tip poorly. The delivery people use their own cars.
The pizza delivery service is often used to play pranks and often results in losses to the pizza delivery business. There are also a lot of robberies of pizza delivery people.
The delivery people are in a vulnerable position and many people take advantage of that, thus raising the costs for all of us.

They have always had a delivery fee..they just have to state it now in their prices. They use to hide it in the price of the pizza.

gas prices are high and the people use their own cars. not company cars. so it's like their tip for gas money. plus, they don't get paid a lot. just think....would you rather have to get ready, take the car, use your own gas, get the pizza yourself, go home, and eat it....or just pay a dollar or two for someone to do all that for you (except the eating part)? if the pizza's good....then the extra dollar or so is worth it.
