If I'm 39 weeks, 4 cm dilated as of 4 days ago and almost 100 % effaced, is it still safe to have sex? I've heard sperm can soften the cervix, but I don't need that. And I've also heard an orgasm can bring on contractions. But since I'm dilated so much and lost my mucus plug two weeks ago, am I prone to infection? Would it be safe if I used a condom? I feel so bad for my husband, he's deprived!

There is nothing wrong with having sex. It's perfectly natural and if you feel up to it at this point, then go ahead. It does help get things moving as far as labor is concerned in some cases. I wouldn't use a condom because there is really no point. You will not get an infection because its natural and women have been doing it for hundreds of years so I don't believe you are at any risks.

However, if you are bleeding or having any unusual discomforts or have any health issues then I would avoid sex just to be safe. Furthermore if your water breaks you will definitely not be up for it, what a silly thing for the previous answerer to say!

Follow your instinct and what comes naturally to you. I am sure that your husband is sensitive to your feelings either way.

GO ahead. Infection is mostly if your water breaks or is leaking. But your plug is something that forms itself back, so while you might of lost a huge chunk it wont stay completely gone. Sperm is good for softening the cervix to using a condom wouldn't be a good idea if you want to help induce labour......

I wouldn't have sex until you see your doctor. He can tell if you don't have your mucus plug anymore if he now checks you internally. Make sure to bring up the fact that you think you may have lost it because sometimes they will not ask.

As long as your water hasn't broken its fine. It is possible that it will bring labour on. Its what I did to try to get my contractions going.
