My car makes a screeching noise for a few seconds after it's cranked . This only happens when it sits for a long time like overnight, or when I am at work. When I use the car frequently throughout the day, i wont have any problems. I dont want to change the drive belts if i dont have to.Can someone please help me?

Yea, go to auto zone and get some belt grease I think they call it to help with the noise.

Inspect the belts with a GOOD flashlight and see if there are cracks in the belt. Then if you do see cracks then it is time to replace it. When you replace the belt, KEEP the old belt in the back , like you do with a spare tire. It will not hurt to have a spare belt.. And then if something does happen, you have a belt to get you where you need to go.

Also check ALL your fluid levels, as the power steering pump is one possiblity where noise can come from.

Here is the troubleshooting site and you can check yourself. Book mark it too.

Get a can of belt dressing.Your belt is probally dry.Spray on your belts while car is idling. Also a bar of soap will work also, hold bar on belt also at idle.Should correct screeching. This is what i would try first before i payed a mechanic who will charge you for something simple you can do.Nine times out of ten this is usually the problem. Also it is a good idea to replace belt every 80,000 miles to be safe. Good luck.

Look for where the surpentine belt rounds a pulley where you can see its ribbing.....the belt ribbing should have no cracks, not even small ones....so look closely.

If so, replace the belt(s).

If mechanical tensioner (which nissan is famous for), then leave alone....if spring loaded (Domestics) replace if new belt squeals on acceleration or startup.

Also, if the car is approaching 80k miles, you may want to look at your pulleys....their bearings will usually give out at this time....listen for a chirping sound.

You can likely take it to your regular mechanic and if you ask nicely he might take a look and let you know, also sometimes employees at an Auto parts store may know.

Chances are, it may only be one or the other, but that's what I would do is get someone to take a look, it's too hard for me to define it here without pictures and even then the real thing is the best way.

You either need belts or they need tightened. Cracked belts need to be replaced. Belts expand over time so you may need to tight them but not really tight they sould have a little play in them.
