In 1945, the USSR overran Austria at the end of World War II and occupied the country briefly. The USSR took a fourth of postwar Germany and occupied it for years, even trying to push the allies out of west Berlin. It has always passed my understanding why the Soviets gave up Austria at once while exerting a grip on Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Jugoslavia
