ACIDS/Liquids/React with Type I metals rapidly, even in cold water , type II metals slowly in cold water, more rapidly in warm water/Reacts with carbonates to form bicarbonates or CO2, depending on the strength of the acid and relative amounts of acid and carbonate/Turns phenolthalein pink/halogens, nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, various carboxy compounds./ HCl, HBr, HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4, CH3COOH

Bases/Generally white granular solids, but often mix with water from air to form white sludges if not covered/Can be corrosive to metals/Does not react with carbonates/will turn phenolthalein blue/Hydroxides of the Type I and Type II metals form strong bases, ammonia-related products form weak bases/ NaOH, Ca(OH)2, NH4OH (ammonia dissolved in water).
