Straight or gay, doesn't matter, romance is the same no matter your orientation. I liked Brokeback Mountain but it was so sad. I like Titanic too, and that was sad. Ghost was cool too. Do you think that tragedy makes for a good romantic movie?

Oh, and lets not forget one of the classics, An Affair To Remember. At the end when he realizes she can't walk, I rate it four tissues.

I don't watch that many romances, or I usually gag at ones that are overdone, so it's pretty hard to hit that hard spot I call my heart. But a few of them do it:
1) 50 First Dates. I can't help it; I know it's slightly cheesy, but when he comes back for her and she doesn't remember, but has that room full of paintings . . . the whole premise just gets me right at the heart. And Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore just seem good together; I love "The Wedding Singer", too- him singing to her on the airplane!
2) Brokeback Mountain. Say what you will about it, but all I ever needed was in Ennis just clutching and sobbing into Jack's shirt. Heartbreakingly sad. There are some other points in the movie that get me as well. It's just a shame that the only time the romance hits me, it's intermingled with such tragedy and sadness.
3) Stage Beauty. I like the initial opposition and slow build-up between Claire Danes and Billy Crudup. I guess I just sort of cheered at the end- something I don't usually do. I was fighting for them to make it.
4) Secretary. I don't think there's anything more romantic (in a twisted BDSM way, of course) than Maggie Gyllenhaal waiting for James Spader at his desk in her wedding dress. And when he comes and takes her home- perfection. Probably one of the most romantic films I know of, and quirky and fun at that.
5) The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Just because I love the message. It's a good movie, too, but isn't the essence of romance right there in the ending? Sweet moments and great acting, too.
Those are the ones that come to mind- never anything too over-the-top sugary sweet, just honest sort of intense love, I guess.

Hmm, as in movies i'd watch with my girl, hmm.
50 First Dates: This has some brilliant comedy, plus it's really sweet with an endearing Drew Barrymore that wakes up sweet and innocent every morning. What mroe could a guy want? Her to remember his name perhaps :P
Dirty Dancing: Cannot be beat, and she'll love you for watching this with her. She thinks she's Baby so don't correct her, just run with it. I also like playing the shot game with this movie. Every time someone says the word "Baby" you have to do a shot. This gets you wasted when the two of you are going out to a club later. Don't worry about it ruining the film, she's seen it a zillion times.
Titanic: It's epic, it can put you to sleep, but remember to wake up for Kate Winslet naked. It drags you along though kicking and screaming and by the end you had better be emotionally invested to feel sad about it because you put that much time and effort in. Sidenote: When you're significant other takes it badly when Leo dies, it's best to be supportive, rather than look at her strangely when she screams at the TV: "There was room on the floating door for two you selfish B****!!!!"
Have fun kids. :P

Sleepless in Seattle, Ghost, and 50 First Dates. Also, Sleepless in Seattle references the movie you talked about 'An Affair to Remember' quite a few times. After I saw Sleepless in Seattle I had to rent 'An Affair to Remember' just to see what they were talking about, and that was a pretty good movie too. Also, I think that sometimes a tragedy does make for a good romantic movie.

An Affair to Remember is a wonderful classic but I do not agree with Titanic because the movie was about the ship not a romance as far as I see it. They put so much into repliciating it and all people remember is...I'm king of the world....
Okay, on to my choices

While You Were Sleeping
French Kiss
Sleepless in Seattle
Princess Bride
Camelot
I guess I like the "happily ever after" kind of romantic movies (except Camelot was kind of sad at the end...)

Moonstruck is my favorite. It has everything. Crazy Italian parents, Puccini, a guy with no hand, dogs, Cher getting a make-over, what more could you want?
Casablanca is romantic in so many ways.
Don Juan Demarco is really sweet. Seeing a fat old man fall in love with his wife again was really nice.
