The biggest benefit is stress release. You can get your frustrations out on paper, (or whatever you use.) and get away with things you couldn't in real life. Unless you're lifting wieghts while you work there's not much else physically. (Unless you're doing a big sculpture and swinging hammers and using power tools.)
Mentally on the other hand is something else, not only do you get the "AAAAAh, that's better," feeling but there's also the creative problem solving aspect of it and exersizing your brain. Sometimes while working on one thing it can get the crap jambed up in your head cleared away and the answer to another problem can come up and that's always a good thing. Then there's just the self satisfaction of just creating and doing something you enjoy. It can make you feel more energized.
If you think about it, how you think and feel in your head can dictate how you feel physically. If you feel really geeked about something you usually feel more lively physically while if you're bummin' or agrivated it can make you feel tired so in a way our brain is our best friend and worst enemy at the same time.

whatever bothers you is released through expression. I feel a sense of relief and relaxation whenever i oil paint on my canvases. it doesn't really have to be good; those vivid colors just makes you want to appreciate the beauty of whatever your doing.
