I have a 99 Malibu, just put a used motor in it(about 35 k miles) and its sputtering at 40-60 mph. Does it worse when you use cruise control. What could be the problem, new spark plugs on it about a month ago. Thanks

I would start bye checking the timing, then go to fuel filter, fuel injectors. Assuming the check engine lite is off. Could be the following but the check engine light comes on in most cases throttle position sensor, vacuum leak. If its getting hot its probly either the catalytic converter or timing will also make it run hot.

What was the old motor doing? If it was running very rich then you may have clogged up the old catalytic converter. You can disconnect the converter and drive it again. If the performance improves, then you found the problem......

good luck

Check the fuel injector, This is probably the problem but timing possibly maybe off, maybe catalytic converter too.
