Well, it commemorates a great man who spent the major part of his life trying to bring the people of Ireland to faith in Christ, building churches, schools, and monasteries. A man who may have been responsible with saving civilization in the long run during the dark ages, influencing the creation of the Book of Kells, and in the long run contributing knowledge which would help explorers discover the western hemisphere.
