My DVD rom will read about 95% of the dvd's that I insert into it, but there are some that it wont recognize as even being in the drive, like Casino Royale and Stranger than Fiction....I've noticed too that it tends to be newer dvds that it mainly has this problem on....the dvd rom drive is only like 3-4 months old and I bought it new.....anyone have a similar type problem and know how to fix it?

It might be something to do with copy protections (Sony Archos etc) on the dvd's and the combination of your dvd-rom. I have had this problem once with a brand new DVD but it would work in all my dvd-writers which was odd. I updated the firmware of the dvd-rom shortly afterwards and I have never had problems since.

It would have been nice to know the make and model of your DVD-ROM so we could see if there are others experiencing the same problem with certain combinations of dvd-rom and disk. The problem with the copy protections is that they get updated on a regular basis and the companies really don't care if the dvd's can't be read on some computers. If it can't be read on a computer it can't be copied.

There is a small chance that the problem could be something else other than the disk or firmware i.e. a faulty drive, dirty lens, faulty IDE controller or cable etc.

P.S. Both Stranger Than Fiction and Casino Royale are Sony pictures releases so you can bet that the disks are protected with Sony Archos which might be causing the problem. Read:

I am not promoting the copying of the disk but highlighting the fact that others are experiencing problems with reading the casino royale dvd.

Hope it helps.

Hi, this happened to me, I have a desktop and a laptop, The dvd dint work on the Desktop but I just wanted to try it on my laptop, the first time it dint work but upon observation (sound of the drive rotating and reading) I figured out that the disk is not rotating, then I opened the drive and found that it was the hole in the middle of the disk, I had to firmly push it into the laptops middle drive holding part.... Then it worked fine... I dont know if its the same problem with your case but this is what happened with me...

You cant do anything with the disk if its a desktop coz you cant physically push it anywhere, just drop it into the cd tray and push it in... so I guess just exchange the disk from where you bought it and try it with the new disk..... All the best....

It's a Sony release & the DVD has several added copy protection layers engineered to protect it from being pirated (& in some cases even being played) on a PC.

These include :
(specific to Casino Royale)

Structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock).
Bogus title set
AND 96 bad sector protections.

There are many others in various online Forums who claim to have the same problem.

There are workarounds, and they will require decrypting software like DVD Fab, or DVD Shrink.
