I noticed that they had put lemon or orange slices in the fish tanks at Petsmart. The fish were all over it! Why do they put the citrus in the tanks?

Fish benefit from a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. As a treat, maybe once a month we'll do the same thing with our tanks - slice up oranges thinly and place them in the tanks. Remove after a couple of hours (last thing you need is the pH going all over the place or the fruit getting fungus).

We also feed our guys romaine lettuce, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, green beans, thin slices of apple, peas - if it's fresh, chances are they get some.

I would have thought that it would be to decrease the pH of the water so it is more acidic. Different fish require different pHs of water. You may live in an area of very alkaline water.

They do that to feed the fish or to lower the pH a bit. I'm think it's more to feed them.
