At least 5 people (Cheney, Rove, Libby, Armitage, McClellan), and possibly Bush himself, were involved in blowing the cover of a CIA agent. While her actual status has been argued, her testimony yesterday, as well as the Director of the CIA's confirmation of her status, leave no doubt that Plame was a covert agent who had undertaken overseas assignments during the past 5 years. While the loosely and poorly written law that Fitzgerald was tasked to use in his investigation could not, in his opinion, support indictments, it is clear that the leaking by administration officials resulted in the ending of a covert agent's career and the endangering of networks and contacts she had developed and worked in for 20 years. Clearly the security of the US was damaged by these acts. While the "identities" law didn't really apply, do laws re: treason come into play?

Wow. People obviously feel strongly about this. I think the first answer you got was dead on. This doesn't rise to the technical level of treason, but there are certainly other crimes that should be looked into.

I notice that the answers falling into the "anti-Plame" category all claim that she wasn't covert (at least at the time her identity was revealed) and/or that she and/or her husband blew her cover. First of all, if she was EVER working undercover for the CIA, this is the sort of state secret that stays secret forever, to protect her and her family if nothing else. Then there is the security of her contacts to be concerned about. Finally, what foreign contact in his right mind would work with the U.S. right now knowing that an administration is in power that is willing to blow the cover of its own agents for political purposes?

As to the idea that Plame and her husband blew her cover, given the dangers listed above, why would they do that? Look how little has been gained from their point of view for the cost they will continue to pay.

And finally, a question. Try putting the shoe on the other foot. What if under that Clinton administration the cover of a CIA agent, covert or not, had been blown by people working for the President? My guess: impeachment proceedings would have begun within a week.

This is just another case of "let's get the Bush boys" again.
Plame wasn't a covert agent at the time. She came and
went to work without cover which anyone could have seen.
I think the media (novak and andrea mitchell) were as
guilty as anyone else in mentioning her name to others.
Scooter just got the shaft with the Democrats wanting
to spend more time and money in trying to involve Cheney,
Rove, Bush and McClellan. Besides, her husband should
not have been the one to send her overseas (not his job
and should not have been his wife). Your "treason" is just
wishful thinking on your part, dear liberal.

NO! this is in elementary terms a POLITICAL WITCH HUNT. will we get into fact? Why do no longer you ask the reporter who got here out with it? She replace into no longer a field agent! Who i think of must be tried for treason is AL GORE going to Saudi Arabia telling them that Muslims have been abused after 9/11 and JOHN KERRY who suggested our troops "terrorized Iraqi women people and youngsters and the Newsweek reporter who made up the story concerning the Quran getting flushed down the bathroom and have been given 15 individuals killed because of the fact of it. I additionally think of the folk who leaked that our intelligence agencies have been undertaking survellance on communications going out and in of this u . s . to terrorists or the secret detainees in ecu international locations. this is WHO ought to GET tried FOR TREASON!

No. Treason refers to taking up arms against your government, or providing arms or material (hardware) support to those who are taking up arms against the government.

Those who leaked Plame's identity should be tried for violating the federal laws that prohibit revealing classified information.

What "cover". Her only "cover" was her picture in Vanity Fair with her husband. There was no attempt to "blow" anything. None of those you list were the source of any leaks. Richard Armitage mentioned her name to Robert Novak. The only crimes have been malicious prosecution by Fitzgerald & The rogue CIA operation by Plame & friends.

Plame was NOT covert if you go by the letter of the law.

Valerie and her loud mouth husband leaked it. This is BS and anyone with even a half of a brain can see it for what it is.

I don't know who was involved in blowing her cover but I agree that whoever did should be prosecuted. Her life and the lives of her family and friends were put in danger because someone couldn't keep his or her mouth shut.
