Linux is very learning intensive. If you are not very technically proficient, don't get started with it as your only operating system. It doesn't have all the drivers for the hardware you might need. The interface is very different from what most people are used to. The underlying operating system is very difficult to manage and the file system is insane.
Good luck.

I just moved from XP to Ubuntu, and it is a breeze. There are a few things you need to learn, but they're pretty easy. I would suggest you make a few Live CDs of Ubuntu, Open SuSE, Debian Linux, Fedora and a few of the others. Experiment, see what suits you, and have fun without risking your system.
As for popups, on Ubuntu, Firefox is the default browser, and has a very strict popup blocker. Almost too strict!
One thing you will find hard to grasp on Ubuntu is that it all just works. It's hard to explain but...everything just works! I've been using Ubuntu for 3 weeks now, and I am getting really angry at stuff on XP that I can do so easily on Ubuntu. To the point where I just invested in a USB drive with Ubuntu installed.
Lastly, the Ubuntu community is fantastic. They all really help, and explain in a really friendly and easy to understand way.
I am biased because I am absolutely loving Ubuntu, but, if you try it, you will see why.
Also, unlike Linux XP 2007, Ubuntu is free. Either download the Live CD image from http://www.ubuntu.com or just go to http://ubuntu.shipit.com and get a free CD sent right to your door, completely free (even postage is free!) Ubuntu also comes with Open Office, and GIMP (much like Photoshop)
Hope this helps!

Buy Linux Magazine there's a Knoppix DVD with the current issue. You can run it without installing it, and it will give you a chance to experiment with Linux before committing yourself.
One of the features of Knoppix is that it is intended to run from the dvd drive, but it is rather limited if you only have one removable disk drive on your machine. However, it is copmprehensive and has many features that should keep you occuppied for hours. It does pracitically everything that you can do with Windows and probably a little bit more as well.

well someone hasnt used linspire, or linux XP 2007... looks like XP, works like XP without any of the fu ck ups that yu get with windows products.
works straight out of the box, sees everything and youll be working in ten minutes.. and it runs off teh CD, without interrupting XP as an OS...
ubuntu is good, but not as good as linspire 07... get iff off ebay for around 3 quid...
comes with gimp2.2 and open office 2, which is a great office clone, but it isnt office... the buttons are in the worng places, and you seem t spend hours trying to find how to do things... but, all said and done..its better than XP... try it and see...
