Does the market really demand so many of this type of media or is this some kind of economic anomaly?

Ok, the obvious answer. MONEY.
So the question of WHY people buy them? 1. Because they want to keep up on the latest gossip, trends and styles and not be left out. Why? Because these celebrities define what popularity is and the readers want a piece of the action too.
2. It's also an ego boost for the reader when the celebrity fails because the reader will feel SO much better about themselves. (I'm not rich and famous, but at least I have HAIR).
3. The third reason is that the readers have crushes and fantasies about a certain celebrity and just want to know every detail about their object of affection.

There is a solid economic demand for them. It's an extremely profitable business.

I think that the magazines are much less expensive to produce than other publications. So, the companies that run the tabloid magazines and such make good money off of them.

And teens will buy anything if it's properly marketed. Put a pretty person on the cover, and something about improving their life--and they'll buy.

It's because teens are seeking an identity and many never find one so they become adults that live through celebrities. They need to be told how to think, act and feel, what to eat, what to buy, what to watch, what to read. Basically they are incapable of any independent or original thought.

Because there are so many people who want to know all the gory details about anyone who remotely resembles a celebrity.
If people didn't buy them, they'd cease to exist!
