The Spartan women used to tell the men this. It means come back as a winner (with the shield) or dead (or on it, because they used to carry the men that had died on the shields they once carried) I know it sounds cold but that was the Spartan way of life!

When the other greek general(with his 1000 soldiers) asked why Leonidas has brought less soldiers then he. When Leonidas questions that generals soldiers as to what their job is...the pot maker, basket maker...then he asks the Spartans, they do their triple "hoot".
Leonidas turns back to the general & says 'looks like i did bring more soldiers then you'
