I bought a new laptop today, and connected it to my home (wired) network, but can't get it talking to a shared network drive I have connected to my XP machine. I have tried everything and can't get it to even see the XP machine or the shared drive on the network...
Have already tried 'map network drive' but it doesn't work.
Somebody please help before I set the damn laptop on fire!!!!

Already have both compters on the same work group, the vista laptop still can't even see the XP machine on the network. Both firewalls on both machines have been disabled and still no joy..... I've only had vista 8hrs and I think I hate it, had no problems xp to xp...

I went through this same issue sort of...I just had to unshare the drive on the XP machine, re-boot then re-share the drive. At that time too my vista machine got rebooted and then it showed up just fine, no problems, and they are not even in the same workgroups.

If computers name does not work in the above try:

\\
the the ip of the xp machine

\\192.168.1.2 for example

also check the firewall on the xp machine isn't blocking it.

Try opening Explorer (Windows Logo (Start) > Computer), and typing the desktop's name, preceded by two back slashes (\\).

Another thing to try is to make sure that both computers are running in the same Workgroup, which can be changed in the Computer Name section.
