In the simplest of terms, there are two things in sociological and statistical research: Sample and Population.
A sample is a particular number of people or things (say 100 people) to apply research questions to. By way of monkeying around with statistics (t-testing, analysis of variance [ANOVA], confidence intervals, and other statistical methods, you can fairly accurately predict how this research would apply to much larger groups (say 100,000 or even a million) which is called a population.
Why don't you research the statistical odds of a female, virgin, college freshman still being a virgin when she graduates in four years.

Before deciding how large a sample should be, we have to define our study population. For example, all children below age three in Rawalpindi. Then we determine our sampling frame which could be a list of all the children below three as recorded by Rawalpindi Region. We can then struggle with the sample size. The question of how large a sample should be is a difficult one. Sample size can be determined by various constraints. For example, the available funding may pre specify the sample size. When research costs are fixed, a useful rule of thumb is to spend about one half of the total amount for data collection and the other half for data analysis. This constraint influences the sample size as well as sample design and data collection procedures.

(Recently), 67K women were followed many years to discover that many developed less breast cancer. Why? 30% less among those that did their own housework. Thought is the motions involved encouraged protective hormones. Performed in a European country, I believe.
