It makes me so sad... =( I came out when I was 14 and my family and friends were brilliant, but on the internet people seem to think it's so wrong.
Why can't we all just live and let live?

Because we are people. Most people will ridicule anything that they don't understand or think is abnormal. It seems that is human by nature. To many people are only interested in telling everyone else what is normal or not. If people would just let people be happy with the way they are living everything would be just fine. However, there is always going to be someone who thinks that they know how everybody should or should not live. They refuse to accept anything that seems to be away from the 'norm'. If you look. Most of the people who are ridiculing others do not seem to live a very happy life.

If I'm not mistaken you're from the UK?

The English speaking portion of the Internet is mostly filled with people from the U.S. and the U.S. is a very backward nation in terms of social progress for a 'developed' nation. Religion is very much at the heart of the fear and ignorance of those who are homophobic, and the U.S. is a more religious nation than most others of the developed world. It is the cause of Americans' tendency for puritanical points of view. They are also very judgmental to the point of xenophobia. The only group in the U.S. that gets treated worse than homosexuals are Atheists and that is so for the exact same reasons. Religion is the culprit in both cases. Try being a gay atheist like me and see what that gets you. I get it double. People ask why we talk about being gay so much. Because it's part of who we are. Why should we have to hide it? Just to make heterosexuals more comfortable? They should simply get over it.

It makes me sad too. I am straight but i was brought up to believe that everyone had a right to their own beliefs, even if they went against my beliefs. No i am not homophobic.
I associate with people with the same open mindness that I do. I do the same with my son.
I believe it is all about education. But with people on the internet i would not worry about them. As you say live and let live. The thing i love about yahoo answers is the fact that there are a variety of answers that you do get, you or I may not like them but we can accept these answers or leave them.

On the internet, everyone is faceless, which makes it easier to be hurtful. A lot of people have strong ideas, and they only have to hide behind an avatar... Luckily the people who know you in the flesh, accept you for who you are. I think that people who have loved ones who are gay go about their views quite differently than someone who can come on a site like this and be hurtful to people they don't know, just because they think something they know nothing (or little) about is wrong.

Congrats for having wonderful family & friends.

Your in the wrong web.
not all people are cruel
In most cases we just don't care and find you (most) to be good friends.
but there are many idiots who think they can change our minds. One guy I know continued to touch my beard and try to put his arm around me after telling NO and stop that an so on.
I put him out of my house by dialing 911 and telling him OUT.
I may have lost a work buddy but I can not put up with that kind of foolishness.
Be yourself and leave sex out of your friendship until the things fit together. be friends first

Live for yourself. As you become blessed to get older, you will beginto see what kind of problems people have within themselves to be hateful. Your problem isn't theirs. it hurts but you can be strong enough to see that everyone doesn't think alike. If you were straight, ignorant people would still be cruel about something. Don't let no one rain on your parade!

They are so full of hate for themselves they feel that if they put others down then that will make them feel better when all they have to do is to start loving and then accepting themselves before they can start accepting anyone else; people like that can only be pitied.

because they see people that are different are afraid to get close to them. They follow the stereotypes that gays are pedophiles, sinners, possessed by the devil, and all that other nonsense, they dont want to find out the truth for themselves. Gays and lesbians have been looked down upon for hundreds of years, so thats what society is comfortable with, no one wants to change. ....I hope they could someday understand and accept us.
