In the beginning, around 4.6 billion years ago, the Earth was covered with one giant sea of molten rock and there was little or no atmosphere. Before life arose, the earth was in the "early bombardment phase" when meteoroids were hitting the Earth very frequently. At about 4.5 billion years ago, a planetesimal collided with the Earth and formed the Moon. Then, over time it began to cool and islands of solid crust appeared. The first atmosphere formed of mostly Hydrogen and Helium. However, this crust were not long-lived due to the increased heat from the Iron Catastrophe. The first stable crust formed around 3.8 billion years ago, and so did the second atmosphere and oceans. It was around this time that life as we know it began.

i think it's lame that scientists think earth EXISTED before life arose. during Creation, God created the heavens and the earth, and animals and plants, and humans, and so on and so forth, all at once. who even proposed the idea that there was some chunk of rock called "earth" and then one day, life suddenly appeared? whoever did should be slapped.
