Hi all. We're having a problem with our 11 yr old daughter. She is constantly getting in trouble for the same things over and over again. I'm tired of telling her to do things (sometimes important things) and she claims she never heard me say it or she 'forgot' to do it. It's to the point where I'm tired of her being grounded over these things as she never learns her lessons. Sometimes it makes me feel like I'm a bad parent because maybe she does have a problem hearing. Yet, she'll hear us adults having a conversation from across the rooms and butt in herself! I have a feeling she's playing with me and seeing how far she take it, but how far should I go as a parent to correct this behavior? Thanks for any advice you have. Share your expierences too! Please :)

My daughter was the same way. I started when she was about 12 and came to a head when she was 18 and moved out. There isn't much you can do. Some say just let her do her own thing, some say to get even harder. We continued on the same course and it didn't work. Some friends tried to be more lenient with their kids and it didn't work. What I was told was to just lover her and keep trying. That is what I tell you. Just keep trying. Don't try to get her into things, she will not do them, and she will be even more unhappy with you. Do keep an eye on her and who her friends are. That was my daughters downfall. Until she is about 18-19 she will be surly. Just keep making her do things with the family. No she isn't deaf, just sometimes. Good luck!

My little brother, who was 12 at the time, used to do the same thing, and they found out that he needed tubes in his ears. So before you give up on her, have her hearing tested. And if that is fine, maybe you should start having selective hearing when it comes to something she wants. Or forget when its something she asked about doing.
Reverse psychology works like a charm.

Write important things on "Post-it" notes. Make her wear them on her forehead so she doesn't "forget".
