The War in Europe openned up the door for a Cold War and left Europe in pieces while the War in Japan clearly marked the end of Japan as an agressor Nation, booting Japan off of Mainland Asia and paving the way for China to become unified under the Communist (well, that was an accident, the Nationalist were expected to win but oh well, China became united) - - - the ouster of Japan from the Korean Pennisula was a small reflection of the chaos in Europe, for the most part the end of the war against Japan anded that chapter while ultimately little was resolved by ending the war in Europe, merely an outward show of Peace.
The war in Europe officially ended at the end of April start of May 1945 with the suicide of Hitler and the wilingness of the German armies to surrender. The War in the Pacific ended in AUgust of 1945 following the detonation of two atom bombs prompting revolt amongst the high command and intervention by Emperor Hirohito.

Simply put, The Russians massacred the whole German 6th army in the East while the British/Americans/Others put pressure in the West, and eventually made it to Berlin and caused Germany's surrender, ending the War in Europe.

In Japan, the Americans dropped 2 atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing almost a million civilians and causing the Japanese Empire to surrender.

Germany was invaded by the Allies from the west and the Russians from the east therefore forcing a surrender. Japan was forced into an unconditional surrender by the dropping of the two bombs and wasn't invaded til after this. They had tried previously to surrender however they placed too many conditions on it.

Quick answer- war in Europe ended when we finally made it to Berlin, but we were winning for months. It was over when the Allies came together in Berlin. We had already conquered Italy. It didn't end in the Pacific theater until we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We were slowly beating the Japanese, but they would not surrounded until we dropped the "big one."
