A compound's formula in the inorganic sense generally tells one what elements--from the Periodic Table of Known Elements, as are given in abbreviated signs(Example:Ca=Calcium): They tell one their quantity and quality. The numbers placed before the elements (Example:2Ca=Calcium): are called coefficients, which let us know that there are 2 moles of Calcium present. For instance the formula: C6 H12 O6 is the formula for sugar. It means that there are Six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms and sis oxygen atoms present in the molecule of sugar. The mole definition gets detailed.
A compound's formula in the organic sense may mean something very different. Organic compound formulas have to do with: carbon chemistry, nomenclature of organic families(Example:Alane's, which Methane is the simplest, propane, butane, pentante;Octane, which is gasoline; Allene, etc.) tetrahedral (four hydrogen's bound to a carbon with a 120 degree angle between them) Also structures of carbon to and how they are bonded to hydrogen and other carbonyl groups. Finally, there is Mechanism of organic chemistry, which is how the groups are transfer ed and the end products of said reactions.
