Wherever you go it is going to be EXTREMELY HOT!!!!!!!!!! Mexico is hot in general, but during August, woah! Well...i just went to Mexico City and it is highly populated. It is the most populated city in the WORLD! If you can imagine that. It is a cool city though. I also went to Cancun. It isn't a city, but more of a beach resort. REALLY nice though! You should visit the Mayan Temples!! They are a MUST SEE!!!! They are historical and certainly one of the places to see!!! I hope this helps!
I hope you have a great time in Mexico. I know i did.

Usually much cooler in the central highlands like Morelia and Patzcuaro. Lots of rain in the summer. Even Mexico City and Cuernavaca will be cooler than anywhere on the coasts. You'll need AIR to sleep at night if you're on the beaches

Queretaro is one of my favorite cities, especially in Summer. A good recommendation. Mexico City is full of fun things, if you can handle the smog. Cuernavaca is the "city of eternal spring." All good Summer get aways.
Actually my favorite place in the world is Tepetongo. It's in Michoacan, maybe 2 hours from Mexico City. It is a bizarre park next to the tourist-free resort Cantalagua http://www.haciendacantalagua.com/index2.html. A little tricky to get to, but absolutely worth it. It's kind of like a supervision-free water park/golf course/sports center located in the middle of nowhere.
It's near the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, which is worth a visit in and of itself.
Unless getting drunk on the beach with other Americans is your idea of vacation.

Good destination is the artists colony, San Miguel de Allende up in the mountains. It's a beautiful location surrounded by cedar forests and not far from the snowy top of a volcano. Very popular with American artists and the people were sweet and gracious to visitors. Since it's in the mountains, you won't have the oppressive heat and humidity experienced in some of the coastal towns at sea level. As your travel agent about it and have a good, safe trip.

Wherever you go in Mexico in August, it's going to be HOT! I'd say you should go someplace on the coast, so that you get some ocean breeze. We went to Tulum last August and stayed right on the beach. It was super hot, but beautiful!

Summer travel in Mexico is hot almost everywhere. One of the better places to visit for its beauty, real Mexican charm, and weather is Guadalajara. You'll love it -- trust me on this.
