What are the qualities in a friend? How long must you know someone before you use the term "friend"? Do other cultures view friendships in a different way than white American Caucasians? Please explain. (I need this for part of a paper in which I have to explain emics and etics). I am looking for examples from other cultures. Thanks so much. I am grateful for any insights.

I view a friend as someone you know, understand, and you can trust. If you don't know much about a person, to me that person wouldn't be considered as a friend yet. You have to know them, hobbies, likes, dislikes, and maybe their background. Also you have to trust the person most. If you can't trust someone to pay you back, to keep a secret, or any thing like that then they aren't a true friend.

I hope my opinion helps. :)

I'm Colombian. I veiw a friend as someone who is nice, has a good personality, is funny, and is there for you when you need them.
