Of the people, for the people, and by the people. An elected official representing his/her constituents has worked, about as well as can be imagined, in the US for the past three hundred plus years. That leader can and should be selected for any reason so decided by the voter. The criteria differs for each individual as people have unique life experiences which make certain issues more important to them than others. Leaders do not always hold true to their campaign claims, are sometimes manipulated by campaign contributors, and at times succomb to public pressure (even from a minority uproar). It is for these reasons term limits exist and if need be impeachment of our leaders is possible.

Who should rule? In my opinion all leaders are those that make decisions that are the most beneficial to the common good. That leader must be well informed and in touch with the people they represent (extreme rarity). The elected official must be wise. I think too much emphasis is placed on intelligence (Barack Obama) and not enough placed on life experience. American society has unfortunately turned to intelligent people rather than appreciation the wisdom of others. A leader should be confident and never waver. A leader should we willing to learn continuously and effectively communicate his thought/actions to his constituents to keep them abreast of new important developments. The leader should not become victim of hubris and know when to allow others to take control or illicit input concerning an issue.
