It’s the second one. Puritans couldn’t stand the C of E because they were full of ritual. They believed that you were either ‘elect’, that is Puritan or you were not ‘elect’, that is ‘damned’, and ‘freedom’ meant following God’s will, the teachings of the Puritan elect. Looking for monetary gain was a sign that you were blessed by God, and proof that you were one of the true members of the Puritan Congregation.
