I learned this by accident. I was doing some masonry work and had a pile of sand left over, when I went to move it a couple of weeks later it was full of cat scat and wreaked. So I made a sand box down wind of my yard under a lilac hedge (nothing grows under mine anyway). First I dug a depression, filled it with gravel and covered it with landscape fabric. Then I made some ten inch sides out of scrap lumber and filled it with sand. Now I rake out the scat and rinse the urine out of sand into the gravel below with a hose. My neighbor said after I put in my luxury kitty commode the neighborhood cats quit using her kids sand box (I'm not sure how she knows this, her kids are in college - lol ). RScott

A motion activated sprayer works very well. An inexpensive version is the Garden Ghost. Startles any animal but does not harm them. It is also fun for Halloween.

You could try sprinkling cayenne pepper lightly over the first couple feet all the way around the perimeter of your garden. Of course if it keeps them out, you'll need to apply more after a good rain.

we had that problem to. cat's using our garden area's as litter boxes. yuck. we put down lots of mulch and it's worked great. they don't seem to like the feel of it and it keeps the weeds down.
