There are several reasons to buying singles. My reason is for the b-sides. THOSE songs usually do not appear on the record the single is from.

Well, first off, singles usually come out before the CD (if there's a CD coming). This can be months before a full release. People often just "have to have it, now".
Second, a single can be a good way to promote a group or artist. Then the CD, if and when it comes out, will be in demand. Or, if the single flops, it gives the artist(s) and producers time to work on the single as well as what ever else they are working on for a CD release.
On the consumer side, you might only like the one song. Why buy a CD when you only want one song? Sure, it's cheaper per track, but if you're not going to listen to the others, why spend the money?

Thing is that on single cd`s u usually get one or two songs.. sometimes even a video.. One of the songs has also various remixes.. You don`t get that on a regular CD. Plus it's a marketing thing too.. Cause fans buy singles as teasers. Also, not only do the artists make money out of the album cd but also out of the singles..
Well, that's how I see it.

Usually a single will have one or more alternate versions, b-sides that aren't on the album, and other cool stuff. If it's just the song itself in the same version as the album, it's kinda lame.

They usually release a single to try to sell more albums. They are cheaper and many more people may buy them. If people like a single they are more likely to buy the album.

The problem is that for alot of bands there are only one or two good songs on the whole CD. Why spend 12-18.00 on a CD when you can spend a small fraction of that for a song you know that you like.
Do they even sell singles any more? I guess on itunes they do. Never mind.

Back in the good 'ole days, when you had to buy your music on tape, we had to buy singles because it wasn't easy to fast-forward directly to the song you wanted. It wasn't until the CD came along that you could quickly skip to the track that you want to listen to.
I remember when I had to get up and walk to the TV to change the channel too. Or having to stand in the kitchen to talk on the phone because it was hanging on the wall.
Kids just don't know how good they have it these days!

cuz the single has remixes that you can't get anywhere else. and they might have live versions of songs that are on other albums or by other bands (like cover songs). some come with the music video for the song (like what tool did with schism and parabola). really it's for collection sake more than anything.

Maybe you just like one song but don't want the whole album.
