Diamonds are still the strongest crystal structure. There are many close in the hardness scale. Carbon makes for some interesting hard stuff see also nanotubes (strongest known fiber) , graphite, and bucky balls (strongest known structure). All used or will be used fro their strengths. Carbon is cool!
