spread evenly at 1 inch deep...shovel and small rake or use your hands around plants and base of trees...remember don't choke your trees and smaller plants so keep it low around the base of plants and trees...especially around the smaller plants you can create root rot if you do...

I have pernnial beds and I don't like it to smother the plants, so I get right down there and just glop it down by the handful.
