I am looking at some high flow cats made by xtremeflow, anybody ever heard of them?Anyway different people tell me different things I just want to know from someone who actually expierenced any difference. It seems they would make a big difference because high flow cats have a bigger waffle design for more exhaust flow. The guys at xtremeflow are telling me I will see a 10-12hp gains but I know an engine builder who says he wouldn't change the cats, because you wouldn't tell much difference in hp gains and the air would flow the same. Please, tell me something, Axelbeast

Unless the engine is modified, you won't notice much differance. The 10 HP claimed is peak HP, developed at high RPM near the engine's peak HP. You may notice a slight differance in throttle response. You'll need a complete exhaust system, headers, bigger pipes, magnaflow or flowmasters, etc to see the biggest gains.

Modern stock cats are pretty good these days. Its not like the 80s and early 90s, when cat converter technology was primitive. These old pellet-bed converters were aweful. Powertrain engineers spend a LOT of time selecting a converter for a car design that meets EPA standards and provides a good balance of airflow and power.

Yes the high flow will make a difference. The stock Cats restrick the exhaust flow and the high flow Cats let the exhaust breathe without alot back pressure. You still need a little back pressure. The tone of the exhaust will be different. As far as horse power, You'll notice a difference when you step on it or go to pass someone. The car will be more responsive. Don't expect the car to "super fast" or ready to win the NHRA nationals. There will be a little better gas mileage with the high flow Cats. Don't expect 5 to 10 mpg increase.

The only real gains you would get by installing high flow converters is on a heavily modified engine. If your engine is stock you will notice nothing for the exception of a little different tone in the exhaust.
