What drives the price up is: the designer name; the reputation that goes behind it; the clinetele who can afford to buy it; higher quality fabrics and more attention to detail; the models who show them (they get paid huge dollars to wear the dresses); the fashion shows (that cost a lot of money) that display them; and the fact that the dresses are not mass produced - there are typically only a limited number of the pieces made and sent out to only exclusive (read "expensive") stores.
That's why they're so bloody expensive. The ugly factor is simply of a matter of designers always trying to be on the cutting edge of fashion. They oft-times create things that the general public are just not ready for. If you're interested in making a career out of designing clothes, you don't have to go ugly to be cutting edge (in my opinion). I think it's just a matter of staying grounded and keeping a finger on the pulse of the "every woman" or "every man." We make up the bulk of the population, anyway. Wouldn't it make more sense to design clothes that are marketable to the vast majority of people, rather than a handful of the "elite"?
If you're interested in studying design, I would recommend FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). I know there a few campuses in California. Check out their website below if you're interested.

That's it, because it's designer, "couture" if you will. But yes, there are some ugly outfits, but the thing about fashion is that it's cultural too, so someone in france might think it's hot and we might think it's not because we're american. But mainly couture is one of a kind, and the fabric is high quality and usually handmade, so you're paying for the label, and the designer to put their dirty hands on it... lol.. but I agree that some of the stuff they put out is really outrageous, but there are people with wealth that will buy it, and hell they can because I won't!!!

the first big reason is its one of a kind dress, by the designer let say Vera Wong who is the top designer is making a dress for Kelly clarkson its Grammy time it take Vera and her crue 3 to 6 months to make it to fit Kelly body...and Vera will never make that again, so;Its the occasion, who is the designer? who is wearing the dress? the coast of fabric they fly all over the world to find the right silk it hard to get, the crue the sit there for months sawing and cutting its all hand maid. that why VERA WONG dress coast an arm and and leg but did you ever see the wedding dress she designers she is a genies

Its the fabric, and when they slap a deigner name on it more and more ppl want to buy it b-cuz on t.v. they show pretty thin girls modeling the ugliest clothes and ppl love it b-cuz they want to be like the girl on t.v. so they buy it its the way they advertise the clothes and the designer lable shoes and dresses are the same way and when its advratise the clothes of corse its going to be in malls so that smacks even more $$ on the deal.

well, its just what you said! theyre high fashion labels that models and celebrities wear, and the quality is immensly better. so they overprice it because it was made by a famous designer. i think its a major rip off, and i like designing clothes too.

different taste and unique style. you might like cheaper ones more because they are more simple but others might go for the unique fabric designs and such that would be pricey.

different fabric quality, the thread count, couture is most expensive because it's about detailing and takes time to add beads etc.
