Yes, 8-17 is a normal age. I wouldn't start wondering AT ALL until she's about 15- or 16. I didn't start until I was 15, my sister didn't start until she was 16, and my other sister started at 12. I think my mom started at 16 also.

There's nothing abnormal about not having her period yet when she's twelve. Ugh, god, I hope she's not the type of girl who feels all self-conscious because she hasn't started. It doesn't mean anything. Trust me, she wants to wait as LONG as possible before starting it. It's not a fun time. It's messy and irritating.

If she hasn't had it by 15 or 16, then maybe it's time to see a doctor. It doesn't neccesarily means she has cancer. There are all sorts of reasons why girls start late or not at all. Some girls don't have an opening in their hymen (flap of skin that partly covers the vagina that usually get's broken when a girl loses her virginity) so that menstrual blood can't get out. There is a chance that there could be a problem with her ovaries, but more likely, she'd just be a late bloomer. My sister, who started at 16, only had hers after the doctor put her on birth control pills. These got her hormones at a "normal" level and she started having her period.

Seriously, there is nothing to worry about. It's highly unlikely that she has cancer. Give it time. Let me guess, she read "Are you there God, Its Me Margaret" so she has all these ideas that having your period is an exciting experience, and that you should feel ashamed for not having it by now. Good grief. She should be glad she doesn't have to deal with it yet. Think about it: congealed, smelly blood oozing out of your vagina day and night for twelve weeks a year for most of your life. Yippee, so much fun! Not to mention the cramps, bloating, and irritability beforehand!

The average age for starting a period is around 12 to 13 although some girls start at 8 or 9 years old. I started mine at 13.

I would recommend talking to your mom as well and also a dr to be on the safe side.

Calm down... this 'friend' is trying to scare you, or they just don't know what they're talking about... between 8 and 17 is a BIG age gap, and its all normal... weight, hormones, even genetics all play a part in when it happens... when did her mother (your aunt i assume) get her period, that is a good starting place as far as when... but its not an exact answer... only a doctor can tell you if there is anything wrong... however, there is nothing to worry about...

Your cousin is fine. She's only 12 and has some time yet. The average age is 13 or 14.

I got my first period at 13.

Not at all. No way. she still has 4 years left to get it yet. Girls get their epriod between the ages of 10-16. My mum was 15 when she got her first one. DO NOT worry at all and there is absoloutely no reason to see a doctor. "TUMMY" is pretty dumb. Why would you want to see a doctor when she is not even 16 yeta nd still has 4 years to get ti? No wonder everyone rated that person thumbs down-bad answer.

its eprfectly normal. i am a late bloomer and didt get mine till i was 14 and a half. it is abnormal if ur over 18 and still ahvent had yours yet. just be patient. 12 is too young mentally to have your period anyways. 12 year olds r still children at heart and shouldnt be bothered with these nuisances at such an age.

It's fine! Everybody gets their periods at different times depending on their body/genetics. There is absoloutely NO link between periods and cancer...so I don't know why her friends are telling her so. Just stay happy and healthy!
