As others have said, the Titanic was the largest for its time, and there were actually about 2228 people on board at the time. Only 705 survived. Actually, Titanic was full because there was a coal miners' strike at the time, and many ships were cancelling voyages because there wasn't enough coal. Many passengers on those other ships transferred to Titanic as a result. There were many common areas that took up space as well.

Early on, the White Star Line made a point of distinguishing itself from its rivals as a luxury line. Even a third class ticket on a White Star Liner was like to a first class ticket on most any other ship. Thus, ppl weren't crammed together like cattle as was often the case on other ships. And yeah, there were also quite a number of common areas, and luxuries like a pool, squash court, gymnasium, barbers, large first and second class dining areas, smoking rooms, the palm court cafe, etc. There were also multi-room luxury suites, the best even had private verandas. JP Morgan, who owned the Line, had one for his exclusive use, but couldn't make that first voyage so it went vacant.

The ship was designed to accommodate about 2,500 ppl but in fact only carried about 1,320 that maiden voyage. Also, more ppl may have died had the Carpathia not been so quick and efficient in coming to its aid.

It was the largest ship of its time. If it were around today it would be dwarfed by todays ships. And I believe it was pretty much full
