I went to E R three days ago with spotting/bleeding. A sonogram showed approx.12 oz. 21 week boy and 37 mm cervix. Sent home and returned next evening with more bleeding and contraction-like 20 second long 5 minute apart pain. was observed and sent home still with pains. returned next evening with bleeding and pains increasing over 8hours to minute long 3 to 5 minute apart. Ultrasouns revealed cervix shortened to 7 mm. Admitted and on bed rest. am told if i carry 48 hrs possible bed rest might go long enough to develope lungs. 5th dayam laying with hips up and total bed rest.still spotting but endocin is stopping pains. Is it possible I will carry long enough for healthy baby? High risk Dr. says it is infection and I will lose Baby with-in 48 hrs. O B Dr. says it is problem withcervix and placenta and I might possibly carry long enough if I carry next 48 hrs.

I'm afraid they will not give you a cervical stitch (cerclage) if you are bleeding. Bleeding has nothing to do with a shortened or incompetent cervix. 48 hours is still not long enough for the baby to be viable I'm sorry to say more like another 2 weeks. Trust me i feel your pain. I lost a son at 20 weeks and it was due to an incompetent cervix. If you have an infection that is not a good sign. If you only had a problem with the cervix they could attempt a cervical stitch but they wont do it with an infection and a problem with the placenta. The bleeding may stop with bed rest and the longer you can keep the pregnancy intact the better. But an infection is another story. As long as your waters have not broken there is still hope. I have had 2 cervical stitch's one with my daughter and one now with this pregnancy, my prayers are with you.

Well it sounds like you need to be admit in to the hospital for observation. At 21 wks there is limited chance of survival for the baby if you do deliver.
However it does sound more like an infection to me rather then an incompetent cervix. They usually just do a Cerclage for this and there is little to no spotting/bleeding.
However if you wish to discuss this more I have a friend who has a web site and has gone through what you are going through with a shortening cervix. Send me a personal message and I will give you her email.

I'd hate to tell you, but if you have an infection that the baby can contract, they're going to make you deliver asap. and with the 48 hour steroid benefit, your baby has a good chance. he'll be sick for quite some time, probably in the NICU the last 19 weeks of what should have been your pregnancy. butttt.. if you can make it, just be really careful, I was on bedrest, but they let me get up and walk around, and by the time I was learning for myself that I shouldn't have been, even though the doctors told me I could, it was too late. I was a mom within days.

If it's your cervix, ask IMMEDIATELY about an emergency cerclage (where they tie the cervix closed with a sterile tie that resembles a shoelace). If it's an infection, hopefully you're on IV anitbiotics and they've started betamethasone or some other steriod to speed up the baby's lung maturation. Good luck either way.
