Confederates were considered the Rebels. Yankees are generally associated with the Northern States though use dates back to American colonial times when it was used by the British as a derogatory term for American colonists i.e. "Yankee Doodle". Later during the Mexican American War, the Mexican version Yanqui, as in Yanqui Go Home, was used by Mexican citizens to refer to all Americans occupying Mexico. Then it was used during the Civil War by Southerners to refer to Northerners.

Confederates were " Rebels " or " butternuts " or " Johnny Reb "
Union Troops were " Yankees ", " Bluebellies " or " Billy Yanks. "
but remember these are the more polite terms as there were others which were used -- some of which were profane.

"Yankee" began as a nickname for New Englanders that eventually was applied to all northerners and now is often applied to all Americans.
In the Civil War, "Johnny Reb" was a generic name for Confederate soldiers and "Billy Yank" was the corresponding term for Union soldiers.
