I think the origin is from the true title of the day - mothering sunday - where a congregation would travel to the local cathedral (or 'Mother' church of the diocese) for a service during Lent.

The modern event is an american invention which just took over the same date.

Because it's NOT mothers day,it's Mothering Sunday and has some kind of religious significance

Hi,mothers day started in the 1600 it was for poor women who worked.If you type in search, how did mothers day start all the info is there.Its very interesting to read.

For the same reason we have Father's Day in June - to drum up trade, & use it as an excuse for more commercial activity!
