for catholics no, mass is celebrated on this day as for the other saints. for the irish-no because he is the patron saint of ireland. st patrick is atrributed with birnging christianity to ireland. the shamrock he used represents the holy trinity, the snakes represent paganism and evil and st patrick is attributed with driving evil out of ireland(it couldn't be real snakes because of our climate). the day origional was only celebrated as a saints day,the first parade was held in america and was to display irish pride, when the irish first entered america they were treated worse than african americans. as with most holidays or celebrations alcohol and other things became incorporated, for example in ireland we don't pinch for wearing green but by no means is the day pointless. the irish were forced to leave irleand for survival in mass numbers back in the 1800s during the potato famine and thus there is alot of irish throughout the world. happy st patricks day.

Blasphemy - then what would the Green Beer man do for a living? There would be no need to eat cabbage and corned beef it would be tragic. St Patrick's Day is as American as apple pie and I'll drink to that!

The holiday is not pointless, It is just that people use it as an excuse to get drunk, I can tell you that it is a religious holiday in Ireland although it is getting more commercial. I just wish that more people would read about the holiday and see the true meaning.

Are you kidding me?
This is the land where new traditions have begun...
Irish-American traditions that have INCORPORATED others who are WILLING to play and laugh with us...
Now, it is American as apple pie!
Other cultures are pretty separatist...
But everyone knows that Everyone's Irish on St. Paddy's Day!
We need that kind of good cheer!

I am neither Roman Catholic or Irish, so it has no particular significance to me. But I won't begrudge those who are and choose to celebrate it, or those who aren't and choose to enjoy it.
