Yes the Irish are friendly but don't wear a orange shirt or blouse on St Patrick's Day! Also be careful when talking about the black and tan(The uniform worn by the British was black and tan in color when they were in Ireland. The color orange comes from the time when William and Mary of Orange of England were King and Queen much to the chigrin of the Irish(Because they were Protestant) The Irish have struggeld much in their history with England and I think this could be humor that balanced out their opression by the British. I don't think it had much to do with St Patrick

The Irish people have long been renown for their hospitality and friendliness, even before St. Patrick. A stingy person, especially a king, or a chieftain, would be shunned if word got about how tight they were with their wealth and the bards could make, or break a king, or chieftain with a poem about him which cast a negative light. St. Patrick taught about Christ and Godly principles which jived(aligned, or complimented)with their culture.

I trully believe the Irish are friendly because of their overall attitude and openness. Some places are more friendly than others, of course. But overall, I think wonderful people.

Being friendly, polite or nice is based very much on one's upbringing. Of course the Irish people, just like Thais (from Thailand) are friendly and hospitable by nature.

OK I'll also FF for you- the Irish are not really cheerful, but they do that to confuse the overlords.

No clear answer. They just are and will go way out of their way to help "lost" and confused travelers. On a trip to Kerry, many years ago, a B&B proprietor had her young son ride with us to our destination, the only available room outside of town, to get us there without getting lost. The name of place escapes but the kindness will always be rememdered by me.
