Well, may be! Atleast for a year or two! Its only when prostitution is made legal, that illegal activities will come to the fore! A deeper research might lead them to know more about circumstances in which prostitution is accepted as means of livelihood. Or it would help authorities to know how illegal activities escape surveillance. But not otherwise.
Inspite of being illegal, girls are forced into prostitution. Think what would happen if its made legal? A girl is also someone's daughter, sister, mother. Its not humane to legalise prostitution.
Most of prostitutes do this for survival. They need help. They need help to restore them to state or normalcy
As for marriage, its not prostitution if meaning of marriage is properly understood. Wife dearly in love with her husband wants to give birth to his children. Sex is more of a service done to her husband. Its not seen as prostitution, if wife loves her husband deeply. Husbands know how much his wife is in love with him from her eagerness to become pregnant. Labour pains, too, are seen more as a 'service done' rather than bearing 'excruciating pain'. Similarly a if a husband is in love with his wife, he doesn't see his wife as being a 'thief' if she chooses to spend his hard-earned money.
Though prostitutes serve in much similar way, its service done bereft of love and affection. They not only hurt their dignity and health, they do also hurt their souls. How could it be legal then?

what would ovid say?

anyhoo, in today's world, there are two sides to prostitiution from my perspective:

a) yes, cause prostitution will go on no matter what. it has for a long time and will continue. i tend to believe that things like this , when legal, will be safer than when underground.

b) no, because it is demeaning to women (or men) in the profession . true, it is technically their choice in some places, but this is still influenced by other factors. and this is certainly not the case in all parts of the world, which is extremely sad and upsetting.

No. Not only is it degrading towards woman with morals, but it would certainly increase std's. Prostitution is a slap in the face to all those people who worked so hard to give women the rights that we have today. How would you feel if your 12 year old daughter tells you she wants to be a prostitute when she grows up??

I think so. It's legal in Germany, the Netherlands, parts of Australia, and probably in other places (I think it's legal in Russia). In the UK, it's also legal (you pay taxes), but you can't be more than one girl in a building (otherwise, it's considered a brothel, and it's illegal).

Girls are already doing it, so I think it's better if it's safer (less worried to call the cops in case of a problem). As for people who say that it will increase adultery, don't worry, most men who go and see prostitutes are already married, so I don't think it would change much!

I don't think it should be advertised as being a great way to earn a living (I mean, having sex with men you don't care about and who are, for the most part, old and ugly, is not really poeple's idea of fun), but I don't think it would increase the number of girls who do it. A lot of girls do it to pay of their studies, for instance.

Just one last thing: how can poeple say that marriage is like prostitution?! I mean, aren't you supposed to enjoy making love with your husband?! I hate when people say such things. I think it's really sad, even worst than prostitution actually, because when you get married, you're supposed to love that person, and not marry him for the money. Bloody cows.

ps: i said "girls" and "women", but I'm also talking about men. And when I say "girls", I'm talking about girls who are of legal age.

I think that prostitution should be legal. I've never heard anyones opinon on this subject but I've thought about it alot. Yes there is danger in it but the danger is larely due to the fact that we teach that women who are openly sexual are deserving of disrespect. Of course a prostitute is one of the most openly sexual women that you can expect to see, so people feel that attacking them is fine because they are not "respectable citizens." People should be able to do what they want as long as they are not intentionally hurting anyone. If we would teach against discrimination and against gender and its roles prostitutes would be able to do what they wanted without being shunned by society.

I think so. Law and morality aren't always the same. You could say that it would increase adultery, but I think that's going to happen anyway. But making it legal would make it safer for all involved- the prostitutes and their customers.

Besides, what about the old feminist maxim of "My body, my choice"?

i think so. its not gonna stop and if it was made legal at least the prostitutes would get health care and have a better chance and being healthy and not spread diseases. an example would be holland. prostitution is legal there and STD's arent high and its generaly safe. i hate the stigma christians and conservatives put on sex. its just sex. it doesnt matter. its not a dirty act and its not a sacred act either

I think it should be legal but highly regulated. That way, prostitues would have to go through mandatory STD testing and be certified clean and the like. The government could also tax prostitution and make money.

There are a lot of pluses and minuses on both sides:
1. medical check-ups and licenses to help fight disease
2. tax on goods more income for states/feds
3..government control on cleanliness
4. less minors drifting around plying the trade
5. cut into organized crime
6. cut into illegal drug scene

1. Mainly moral issues, Adultry, Personal self-respect of the
"contractor", mental/physical damage to the equipment etc

Personally think it should be legalized and the usage of
discouraged.

i dont have a strong enough opinion to say whether it should or should not be legal but I dont understand why it is illegal, but laws dont always make sense. At often times, sorry, i mean all the time, its about power, and money: politics.

Some porn starts make a ton of money. Call me crazy, but aren't they selling their bodies for sex? Isn't that was prositution is? haha
Carry on...
