Wow, people think it's so clever to switch a couple words in a sentence and make it mean something different. It's just some bullcrap people throw at you to try to control you. Don't listen to it. Oh, just for the record, it's "failing to prepare is preparing to fail." It's easier to say "be prepared." And it's not egocentric or stupid to say it that way.

Possibly but you could also be being realistic. In certain circumstances you do your best, but have to accept the reality that only a small percentage of candidates will be successful, ie; at a job interview, entrance exam etc. You may well have done your best, but a realistic stance may mean you are prepared that you might not get the result you hoped for.

Whatever happens, if you know you have done your best, you can ask no more from yourself. Dont ever short change yourself - the worst feeling in the world is to come away from a situation knowing you could have tried harder. (Really galling if you are placed 91 in an exam and 90 get in to the college you hoped for!!) I know as it happened to me many years ago.

Isn't it the other way around, i.e. if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail?

That's what the people who have failed say. Being prepared for every possible outcome is just being practical...
